Shadia S. Tolliver was born in Albania during much of the country’s civil unrest. Her immediate family was fortunate enough to flee to Austria shortly after her birth and resided there until the age of 10, at which time her family moved to Anchorage, Alaska in pursuit of the American dream. As a result of her childhood environment, she is not only proficient in English but also speaks several Albanian dialects and conversational German.
Her healthcare career began at the early age of 14 volunteering at Providence Hospital performing hearing exams on newborn infants. At the age of 16, she became the youngest hire at Providence Hospital Radiology Department. Her early work experience led her to pursue a career in medicine and thus she went on to earn several undergraduate degrees from the University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Washington and University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of the University Of Washington School Of Medicine Medex Program.
In addition to her primary care experience, she is the first and only mid level provider in the state of Alaska practicing within the field of Ophthalmology. She is trained in general, neurological and acute ophthalmic care including surgical ocular lesion excisions. She is married to Leslie D. Tolliver II, also a graduate of UW Medicine and current work colleague. They are both actively involved in the University of Washington-MEDEX training program where they provide lectures and support for current and new graduate students. Aside from academia, she enjoys baking various treats for friends and family.
